Like a Vision   -   March 2025

Music and imagery all have stories, which of the two inspires what part of the creation of an artwork? Do these two sensory inputs of audio and visual work together in the brain to produce unexpected results?

Is it just a happy circumstance that audio and visual can align..?

10 artists were invited to produce a work which references their personal story of sound and image, what inspires the vision?

The exhibition experience, for the audience, will hopefully open up a new connection in music, inspired by the artist's personal story of sound and/or vision, of happy collision or sensory collaboration.

Angela is a visual artist on the Sunshine Coast and she goes by the name of ARTIFAKT.

Jacqueline Gonsal - Locked in Paradise (2020) acrylic on paperboard

BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOU'VE GOT - Massive Attack

This artwork is one from a series that paid homage to the notion of ‘living in paradise’ during the Covid 19 pandemic where 5km radius walks became solo dances of peace and gratitude through the loneliest of days. Suffocating in forced togethernesses each darkness brought cold comfort and heart wrenching connection with nature, ancestry, and the universe.

The OM discs : made from a recycled paper and clay blend were originally part of a larger artwork made for the Coolart Gallery’s 25th Birthday celebration in 2023

Massive Attacks ‘Be Thankful’ is an absolute classic from 1992 when I was an art student, and the last band I saw play at Festival Hall, Brisbane.

Together these artworks remind us that light can shine through dark times if we can be grateful for the smallest things… the 5 km radius night sea walks, the stars in the sky, the dark wave crashing on rocks.

Say it with me… just be thankful for what you’ve got …

Steven Riols - My Happy Place

My name is Steven and I live with an invisible disability. I spend most of my energy just going through the mundane thing of life. By the time work is over I'm running on fumes and all I can do is a very poor performance at pretending things are normal with my friends and family. At times I let my guard down and allow myself to open up about my difficulties. The unease it creates makes me feel guilty, like a real party pooper. Most of the time I then get served the usual precooked positive comment that aims at changing the topic as soon as possible. When you are living with a chronic degenerative disease, hard times are part of your life and they are here to stay. That's why force fed positivity can sometimes be a bit hard to digest. To avoid this awkward situation I often feel like it's best to stay on my own. I do this more and more... If you meet someone like me, and he tells you life is hard, sit next to him, hear his story and simply tell him 'it's sad mate'. If the person cries, that's good, it means you have been a good friend.

GOOD NEWS - Mac Miller

This songs atmosphere and lyrics made me feel understood for a minute or two. I cried. I thought ‘It is sad’ and it helped me feel better.

Maybe I'll lay down for a little, yeah
'Stead of always trying to figure everything out
And all I do is say sorry
Half the time, I don't even know what I'm saying it about
Good news, good news, good news
That's all they wanna hear
No, they don't like it when I'm down
But when I'm flying, oh, it make 'em so uncomfortable
So different, what's the difference?
When it ain't that bad
It could always be worse
I'm running out of gas, hardly anything left
Hope I make it home from work
Well, so tired of being so tired
Why I gotta build something beautiful just to go set it on fire?

Ben Higgins - Reflection

Movement, Direction and reflection slowly but surely until reaching the destination is based on CHANGES by David Bowie. His initial verse has these lyrics "Still Don't know what I was waiting for and my time was running wild. So I turned myself to face me but I never caught a glimpse." A connection with Movement, direction and reflection and the great crested Grebes position and actions are based upon these lyrics.

Time Traveller
Based on the story of a time travelling Koala who is ready to explore beyond his world into the unknown

The Energy created from ELECTRIC AVENUE  by Eddy Grant has always put me into a different realm. From electric beats to lyrics It makes me feel like stepping into a different dimension. I relate to a Koala so I guess this is me in some way astro travelling to the music connection. I feel like jumping into a vortex of colour that I havent seen before and travelling further to see what is beyond.

Natty Dipold - Get Better

This is a piece I made for a friend who was going through chemo therapy. Being a world yoga teacher I didn’t think she would engage in such measures yet with respect to her course of action I decided that making a piece for her after to help her get better would be the best thing as she reminded me of the dance of life.
The song relates to this as my vocation and purpose being here in Coolum Beach.

GET BETTER - dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip.   Meet Natty

Wayne Barbe - Bay Notes, A minor similarity

My recent artworks have focused on capturing the physical attributes of the coastline at Coolum Beach. Through the mediums of photography, drawing, and collage, I endeavour to convey these diverse natural elements in a visual representation, observing that these visual representations bear parallels to various disciplines, including Mathematics and Music, Science and Art. For instance, the spiral is evident in nature, our DNA, plants, galaxies, weather patterns, and music. Similarly, pattern, geometry, sequences, chance and chaos are recurring phenomena.

MUSIC PIECE by John Cage: Sonata II (Sonatas and Interludes prepared piano).  Performed on the “prepared piano,” an instrument adapted with various objects, the composition was crafted to incorporate interpretation while adhering to a highly melodic structure derived from a fundamental mathematical formula.

BIO Residing in Coolum Beach for the past four decades, my art involvement is in the areas of fine art, graphic design, photography, and ceramics, having completed tertiary study in these areas. I have participated in various group exhibitions.

Gordon & Susanna Sykes - The Rhythm of Coolum Streets

Gordon and Susanna are siblings and this piece echoes Gordon’s strides, as a serious runner, from Coolum Terrace to Mudjimba Esplanade and back on a Wednesday afternoon. The audio of “Hellfire” by The Black Dakotas is layered with cars and heavy footsteps. The audio of Hellfire by The Black Dakotas is layered with cars and heavy footsteps.

Ben Samson - Life Tide

Ben Samson is a passionate 16-year-old musician with a love for music production and composition. He enjoys performing on the piano and drums, especially in jazz styles, which deeply influence his compositions. Ben is also a fan of hip-hop and RnB, and these genres, combined with his jazz background, shape his musical identity. His composition, Life Tide, produced on LogicProX, reflects the vibrant community and environment of Coolum Beach and the essence of his teenage life.

Life Tide blends a mix of genres, incorporating modern trap drums played on an acoustic drum kit and a neo-soul Rhodes piano progression, creating a unique fusion of styles. The song features a jazz-inspired piano solo, layered with synths, electric bass, and percussion to build a rich, complex texture. The track transitions through different moods, from the upbeat energy of the drums to the introspective piano solo, showcasing Ben’s musical versatility. In the final section, the main melody is played on an ‘80s synth lead, countered by a secondary analogue synth melody, representing various facets of Ben’s life and capturing his personal journey through sound.

Leo Bryant - Trapped in the Null

This is an image i have created not to tell a story directly, but more so to create a certain feeling. The image is meant to represent many feelings some of which being isolation, loneliness and anger, all three of these examples being    represented by its location, situation and its harsh colour.

Akira Yamaoka - Memory of The Waters

Evelyn Symons - Seeking Solace

Evelyn is a 17-year-old singer-songwriter in her final year of school. A passionate literature student and a self-described perfectionist with a deep interest in poetry, writing, art, and music she finds it challenging to express herself creatively but has learned that growth comes from vulnerability.

Her piece Seeking Solace combines her original lyrics with an acrylic painting of a grieving woman, exploring themes of melancholy and comfort. The song Sparks by Coldplay holds deep personal meaning, embodying the emotional solace she seeks in times of grief and loneliness. Both works reflect the vulnerability and strength in reaching out to others during tough times.   @evelynsymons_music

Mr E - If Byrne-ing Heads Could Talk

Burning Down The House - Talking Heads

Talking Heads, a pioneering US rock band in the new wave genre, toured Australia in 1979, including a show in Brisbane. A local music reviewer, almost apologetically, remarked that the band was ahead of its time—perhaps hinting at poor ticket sales and a lack of local appreciation. In hindsight, the prediction proved accurate.

The song Burning Down the House was inspired by a Parliament-Funkadelic chant, "Burn down the house," which meant breaking out of one’s comfort zone. David Byrne repeated the phrase during a jam session, evolving it into the final version. Using a technique influenced by producer Brian Eno, he sang nonsense syllables until the phrasing fit, later adding lyrics from collected phrases. While the song has no deep meaning, it has inspired great covers and memorable music videos.
